It's that time of year again. Time to make resolutions! Time to break resolutions! That's right--it's no secret that most people break their New Year's resolutions within the first month or two of the year. New habits are hard to form while old habits are even harder to break. But people still use the flip of the calendar to a fresh year to turn a new page in their lives, too. Making resolutions is a great way to reevaluate what is important and what we'd like to improve in our lives.
That being said, most resolutions focus around self-improvement. They are, by nature, self-centered things because we control what our goals are for our own lives. Whether it is losing weight, kicking that smoking or drinking habit, reading more, or even something as simple as flossing every day, we determine if we keep or break our resolutions to ourselves. But what if our resolution was about someone else? Impossible? Nope.
This year I resolve to revolve...around Jesus. Instead of having resolutions that simply revolve around me and what I do, I want to have my life and decisions revolve around Jesus. When I think only of myself and what's best for me, I'm simply thinking the way everyone does--looking out for número uno. When I change my thoughts, words and actions to revolve around Jesus and what he's done for me, my perspective shifts. Instead of acting selfishly and in pursuit of my own personal gain, I act out of love for Jesus. If my life revolves around him, I think about his sacrifice and how I can share that with others. I think about how I can emulate a lifestyle that will bring others to see that their lives can revolve around Jesus, too, and they will be better off for it. Revolving around Jesus means putting myself dead last--and being fine with that.
By the grace of God and through his Holy Spirit, all of us can resolve to revolve around Jesus. And even if we slip up (as we inevitably will), we can still flee to him for comfort and a fresh start each day. Will you resolve to revolve with me?
