"Think before you speak." "Carpe diem." "Do unto others as you would have them do to you." "Live with no regrets." "Live like you were dying."
The above phrases are just a sampling of the mottoes many people choose to live by. Having a motto can help to bring focus, purpose, and passion to your life. It is a quick way to sum up how you act and why. When life hits hard, humans find it useful to have something to cling to as a means of reorienting and reorganizing.
Do you have a motto? If not, I urge you to consider this one: "Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31) At the start of the school year, I enjoy encouraging students with this passage. It reminds us of our motivation as Christians. It gives us a focus, a purpose, a reason for doing our best. It is not personal glory or fear of punishment that cause us to act the way we do. We devote our lives to the glory of God, who rescued us from sin and continues to walk with us every step of the way. The peace and joy that are ours through Jesus are the best encouragement we could ever receive. So even when the daily grind seems to be draining us of all energy, or our tasks seem unimportant in the grand scheme of life, or an argument with a friend or family member saps our energy, we remind ourselves that we live to do everything to give glory to our Lord and Savior.
With that in mind, here's a fun video to kick off our school year. To God be the glory!
